DETROIT - July 17, 2006.
Federal U.S. District Judge Anna Diggs Taylor struck down President Bush's warrantless surveillance program, saying it violated the rights to free speech and privacy, as well as the separation of powers enshrined in the Constitution. Taylor is the judge to rule on the legality of the National Security Agency's program.
This puts a damper on the Congress writing a new law to make Bush's illigal program "legal." Not only does this surveillance program violate the law (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act - FISA), it violates the U.S. Constititution, which cannot be easily rewritten.
